Metrou Unirii Operatiunea: Galeria

22.02.2010

The metro stations under Unirii Square, Unirii 1 and Unirii 2, are some of the busiest in the city. Thousands of people transit this ramified underground void daily, and many of them use it to cross from one line to the other. Thus, one of the most frequently used parts of this space is the corridor connecting the two stations, the object of our project. The main purpose was to attempt to neutralise the feeling of pressure induced by the proportions of the connecting corridor, and the secondary ones were as follows: the possibility of a surprise for the everyday urban traveller, the attempt to prove to ourselves the fact that interesting results can be achieved even with minimal investments and, last but not least,  the amusement of a constructive teamwork experience.

The idea, developed by the architect Radu Negoita and his team of colleagues, was the insertion of a ”living” paper ceiling which is moved by the crossdraft in the tunnel. The image perceived by the unexpecting passer-by is that of a wide cinetic surface whose undulating waves recall a tormented sea or a green hill swept by powerful winds. Moreover, through the absconding of the real solid ceiling, the feeling of verticality is amplified and the rhythming of the parallel ranges reduces the feeling of depth. Under normal circumstances, a ceiling situated at a lower level than the original one should accentuate the feeling of pressure, but the effect obtained is exactly opposite – the paper waves render the lower horizontal plan immaterial thus making it harder for the passer-by to deduce the actual height of the space.

Unfortunately, the raw material and its characteristics, as well as the fire-related risks rendered impossible the prolonging of the lifespan of our kinetic ceiling.

None of what has been achieved would of been possible without the cooperation of the people at Metrorex. Thank you!
